CrossReach | GO2 Day & Community Service – CARES Funded Project

GO2 is a tailored service that helps young people with disabilities take part in a variety of community activities while building essential life skills and confidence needed for greater independence. Based in Springburn, Glasgow, the purpose-built facility provides a safe and welcoming environment where every stay is planned around the individual’s needs, interests, and wellbeing, ensuring personalised support and meaningful experiences.

The service operates year‑round and has a consistent demand for energy to support care provision, accessibility requirements, and daily operations. This made GO2 well suited to benefit from on‑site renewable generation as part of CrossReach’s wider transition to low carbon energy across its estate.

Gensource delivered a rooftop solar PV system at GO2, completed in March 2026, supporting the site’s move towards cleaner energy while maintaining the high standards required in a sensitive care setting. The system was designed in line with RC62 guidance as far as practicable, ensuring safety, compliance, and insurer requirements were fully considered.

System Performance:

The installation delivers strong environmental benefits while reducing reliance on grid electricity:

  • Annual Generation: 47.97 MWh
  • CO2 Savings: 9.27  tonnes per year
  • Equivalent Trees Planted: 426 trees per year

The system reduces environmental impact while supporting the ongoing delivery of short breaks and respite services for children and young people with additional needs.

System Overview:

  • System size: 56.42 kWp
  • Panels: 124 × JA Solar 455 W Black Frame modules
  • Inverters: 2 × SolarEdge 20 kW inverters with optimisers
  • Monitoring: SolarEdge import/export monitoring

A range of safety and quality measures were incorporated, and installation quality was independently inspected by an external Clerk of Works during installation and on completion to ensure full compliance with the approved design.

CARES funding and the PPA model:

The project was supported through CARES funding. CARES (Community and Renewable Energy Scheme) is a Scottish Government programme delivered by Local Energy Scotland that supports the installation of renewable energy technologies while helping host organisations access low carbon energy.

At GO2, CARES funding supported the installation of a solar PV system owned by Eco‑Congregation Scotland. Under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), Eco‑Congregation Scotland sells the electricity generated on site to CrossReach, who own and operate the service. This model enables local renewable energy generation while delivering long‑term benefit to both organisations, without requiring upfront capital investment from the care provider.

Outcome:

The GO2 project demonstrates how CARES‑supported solar PV can be successfully delivered in specialist children’s services. Through careful design, independent quality assurance, and an appropriate commercial model, the project provides reliable low carbon energy while meeting the operational, safety, and safeguarding requirements of a sensitive care environment.
