Students, apprentices and tradespeople came together at Fife College’s Dunfermline campus on 12 March for Working in Solar: Careers, Skills and Opportunities, a free event highlighting the growing need for skilled people in Scotland’s solar sector.
Gensource Managing Director Josh King spoke on the industry panel, sharing firsthand insights from delivering solar and storage projects across Scotland.
“Tradespeople are starting to come in such high demand in this industry. The scale of growth is phenomenal,” he said. “We need good, experienced roofers; we need electricians. Those are the two primary skill sets, but beyond this we provide opportunities and routes to qualifications for people with all backgrounds, as long as they have the drive and willingness.”
Reflecting on how the job market is shifting, he added: “With the upturn of AI it’s very likely that what many people do in their day‑to‑day work will be transformed. You hear phrases like electricians will earn more than lawyers – and I don’t think we’re far away from that.”
Attendees had the chance to ask questions over lunch, explore training pathways and hear directly from organisations supporting the move to low‑carbon careers. The event was delivered by Fife Climate Hub, Fife College and the Local Storytelling Exchange, with support from Community Energy Scotland, Fife Council, Gensource, SEDA and The Verdancy Group.
